Tomorrow in Vancouver. Air Quality and Health Impacts of Energy Resource Extraction, Processing, and Transportation. Sheraton. Some of you may be interested in attending the BC Lung Air Quality and Health Workshop on March 10, 2014 at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre. This is the 11th annual workshop, and the focus of this meeting is Air Quality and Health Impacts of Energy Resource Extraction, Processing, and Transportation. Unlike in some previous years, this years workshop may be of interest to a broad range of students, including those not in the environmental health stream. The meeting will combine presentations of research results from around the world (including Canada, the US, and Australia), while also presenting and discussing issues of particular relevance to BC. Local speakers include Jim Standen (Assistant Deputy Minister, Environmental Protection Division, BC Ministry of Environment), James Lu (Medical Health Officer, Vancouver Coastal Health), and Paul Van Buynder (Chief MHO, Fraser Health). In addition to hearing interesting talks on a very timely issue, the workshop will also provide an opportunity to meet and network with public health folks from across the province. The talks at this workshop are geared to a diverse audience, so most of the material should be accessible even to those who do not work directly on air quality and health. We also ask all speakers to touch on policy implications in their presentations, so even the research talks should have real world relevance. Past attendees have included government officials, public health officials, physicians, researchers, students, and interested members of the public. BC Lung has agreed to provide a discounted registration rate of $50 for students (youll need to show student ID). Theyre in the process of updating the registration materials to include this discounted rate, so it may not yet be indicated on the registration form. More details on the workshop and registration can be found here: bc.lung.ca/association_and_services/air_quality_workshop.html.
