Tomorrow is the ninety-seventh birthday of the conductor/composer Anton Coppola, uncle of Francis Ford Coppola and great-uncle of Jason Schwartzman. Mr Treigle sang under his baton for the conductors New York City Opera debut, in 1965, with Carmen (with Beverly Wolff as Carmen, and Richard Cassilly and Plácido Domingo alternating as Don José). Interestingly, twenty years later Phyllis Treigle sang her first Mimi in La bohème under him, for the New Orleans Opera Association. In fact, he had conducted the soprano in her professional debut, as Flora Bervoix in La traviata, in 1980!
