Tomorrow night in our evening study we will conclude our segment on the trustworthiness of the transmission of the biblical text behind our English translations. We will have room for discussion, as always, and I will draw some conclusions based on the available evidence. We will close by looking at some examples of colophons. A “colophon” was a note left by the scribe at the end of his copy of the manuscript that was being copied. Such colophons took different forms, from the humorous (to us at least!), to moving prayers, to warnings—curses even!—to those who would even think about stealing the manuscript that the scribe had labored over, to profound theological comments about the nature of the text. Some colophons provide very important information to paleographers in tracking a manuscript tradition, which in turn has affected our English translations. With an eye to the future on the next segment of our class … Ever wonder how we got the books—and just those particular books—in the bible? What about those that didnt “get in?” And what about these alternative texts and the communities/individuals that used them? And who decided all that anyway? Was Early Christianity (i.e., the first 3-4 centuries) really a free for all with different forms of Christianity competing with each other? These are very popular questions today.
