Tonight I attended a potluck where I knew no one. Attempts at striking up conversation fell flat, but I persisted. Finally I met the most amazing woman. She is an artist who taught in schools, then taught art to cancer patients at a hospital. The emotions people brought to their art were exciting, and draining. When choosing the type of art they would do at the hospital, shed have to take physical limitations into consideration. Patients fingers would be sensitive, and their blood was thin. In hindsight, working with glass was not the wisest choice. Finally, she opened her own glass studio in Pioneer Square, selling at local galleries. While I am familiar with glass blowing, she does another type--kiln-formed glass. Pieces of glass are joined together when they are heated in a kiln. As opposed to the round objects in blown glass, with kiln-formed glass, you can slump it into a mold to make bowls or plates. Different colors of glass heat and cool at different rates, and as a result, this often plays into the design. The more we talked, the more I was sure wed met before. At long last, we pieced it together. We met at a Kim Ricketts event years ago. The last time I saw Kim, we had a terrific conversation. Her voice trailed off, I had no idea she was sick.... Life. Colorful and fragile, like glass.
