Tonight, I shine the light on Humphrey Bogart, he started kicking around Hollywood around 1930, playing a lot of juvenile roles until breaking out in 1936 with his standout performance as Duke Mantee in Petrified Forest playing hardball with big stars Leslie Howard And Bette Davis . He held his own. He moved on to playing featured gangsters and Cagneys 2nd Banana. He finally played gunsel with a heart Roy Earle in High Sierra. He and his dog Pard won audiences over. He quickly moved up to Dashiell Hammetts Sam Spade, he never looked back. Soon he played romantic lead Rick Blaine in Casablanca . He remained an A lister for the rest of his career, giving us Philip Marlowe in the Big Sleep, Harry Morgan in To Have And Have Not, in which he got to have Lauren Bacall as his paramour. He went on to play Fred C. Dobbs in The Treasure of Sierra Madre, finally winning the Oscar for The African Queens skipper Charlie Allnut.he also played the Caines skipper. He played tank and ship commanders, doctors, countless gunmen, night club owners, soldiers of fortune, attorneys, newspapermen, press agents, millionaires and many more. All with style and a curled lip snarl. There was never anyone like him before and we really havent seen his like since. Harrison Ford has played some similar characters, but for the most part hes his own guy. He was truly The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of.
