Tonight I watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, loosely based - TopicsExpress

Tonight I watched Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, loosely based on Stephen Vincent Benets Oregon short story The Sobbin Women, which in turn was based on the Roman legend of the Sabine women (with Sabine sometimes pronounced sobbin). With Howard Keel and Jane Powell in the leads, its not among the first rank of Technicolor Cinemascope musicals. Furthermore, the plot about six backwoods brothers kidnapping girls for brides goes against all kinds of contemporary sensibilities. However, I noted two very familiar faces among the girls and waited eagerly for the credits. There I discovered the statuesque Julie Newmeyer, who became Julie Newmar (the best Catwoman), and Ruta Kolsanki, who became Ruta Lee, queen of the dinner theaters who once signed the cast on my brothers broken foot. What fun to see them as they were starting out!
