Tonight (Mon, Sept 15) at 8:00 pm on Classical 89 (2am and 7pm today on BYU Radio) well play The Surprising History of Siblings in Georgian England, an interview with Amy Harris from the BYU History Department. She is a specialist in genealogy and family history who recently wrote a book which teased out of all her genealogy research really fascinating insights and discoveries about how brothers and sisters got along, inherited family wealth or debt, dealt with aging parents, shared power and property within a family, etc. For me, the real take-home message of the interview was that although women had almost no institutional or legal power in England a few hundred years ago, that they actually did have surprising influence in the more informal setting of the family. Its all quite interesting stuff and Id encourage you to tune in or find the show on our website--it should be up and running by tomorrow.
