Tonight a European Ariane 5 rocket blasted off from Kourou in French Guiana at 21:30 UTC on 6th February 2013. This launch placed into orbit the ABS-2 and Athena-Fidus satellites. ABS-2 for the Asia Broadcasting company will be positioned at 75 degrees East and has 51 Ku, 6 Ka and 32c band transponders. Athena-Fidus for CNES will be positioned at 25 degrees East and has 23 Ka band transponders to provide satellite broadband communications. This was the first Ariane 5 launch of 2014 and the first broadcast in full high definition.
