Tonight, as I was driving home in the freezing rain, I saw a little fluffy white shape walking quickly down the sidewalk in my neighborhood. I quickly pulled over and called - luckily this sweet little pooch came rushing back to me and hopped right into my car. He was soaking wet, so I dried him off in my coat the best that I could and drove over to the 24 hour Vet Clinic by my house where we scanned him for a microchip and dried him off a little more. Luckily, this little pups owner was smart enough to have him chipped. With just a couple of phone calls, I was in touch with his family, who live only 3 blocks from my house, and I was able to drive him home. As soon as I arrived, his mom (an adorable 35 year old single mother of 3) pulled me inside and gave me the biggest hug (after saying hello to her sweet little pooch of course). She started crying which of course made me cry. It turns out, her pup had gotten out this morning when he was let out to potty. There is apparently a hole in the fence that needs mending, which was discovered after his escape. Needless to say, mom is thrilled, we chatted about my rescue work, about her kids and how her sweet pup came into their lives. She offered me a reward, but I told her she could pay it forward by donating to the shelter or fostering a homeless pet. It was just such a nice feeling knowing that her pup was safe at home. Sometimes dogs just get out - even with the best owners! Rescue really can be that easy and I am so happy to be a positive influence on this family. It also goes to show just how important microchipping really is! Tonight was a very chilly hour well spent!
