Tonight at Hibbleton Gallery, well be presenting Ahmed El Maânouni’s 1981 Moroccan documentary Trances, about Nass El Ghiwane, “the Rolling Stones of North Africa,” who rejected the predominant Egyptian âsriya music, instead drawing on over a thousand years of Moroccan trance music tradition, including the Gnawi Sūfī practices of ritual possession that were cultivated in Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Burkino Faso, and Mali, in order to denounce unemployment, corruption, and social inequality, while reviving Morocco’s musical heritage.
