Tonight at yoga class, Melanie Salyers said to me, “You’re retired, aren’t you?” I laughed. “From what?’ I tossed Brenda Losey into the mix (perhaps she wished I hadn’t, but oh, well.) I said, Brenda and I are world class dilettantes, women who had a bunch of children, who have worked at this and that over the years, never long enough at one thing to retire from anything, officially, at least. Do I wish I had a dandy monthly retirement check or pension waiting for me? Well, hmmm, that would be nice BUT, on the other hand, not that I ever gave it a whole lot of thought, until now – that would go in the ‘lack of planning and foresight’ category – I would still do it the same way if I had to do it over again. I was not cut out to do anything for 35 years. Well, I’ve done marriage for that long (as of next month) but that goes in the ‘fluke of nature’ category. The longest I worked anywhere was The Greenfield Daily Times (12 years.) I am proud of my checkered work history. Now is THAT going to keep me warm and cozy and financially solvent in my twilight years? No. But so it goes ........ Alms for the poor? Ha.
