Tonight is Legacys annual Christmas party. Legacy Hospice - to not be confused with Legacy at North Augusta, the assisted living facility here in Staunton. I rarely get to see my coworkers because I work from home, so its even more special to me. We are meeting at Veritas Vineyard at Afton and my only regret is that it will already be dark when we gather for all the merriment. We start out with an hour of drinking wine and looking at each other all dressed up, meandering around so we can see who brought who. And then we sit down to our choice of Filet, chicken, or salmon, and all the creative artwork they can muster on a plate. As one who is more used to hoping it just comes out of the oven right, it will be a treat to sit down and feel like a judge on the Food Network. Yes, Im excited. But the gravity of the night lies in the fact that we are gathering because we have one thing in common. We all carry the load of helping people get through their final days. Even in the midst of our merriment, our hearts have to push through knowing that simultaneously, there are people, just like us, who used to gather for Christmas parties, that know this Christmas is their last. And there are also those of us who wont see another Christmas, but dont know it. We lost a CNA in the last year . . . found her at home . . . her funeral was full of people talking about how much she had touched the lives of our patients and those around her. Thats why we need to eat, drink, and be merry. Wring out the holidays for all theyre worth. Right now Im going to start a day full of baking. Our CEO, Brad Hunter, likes my chocolate chip cookies, so every year he gets the whole batch with a big bow for his family. My kissing up offering. Well, maybe not so much. Im just totally grateful that he hired me to be a part of this work . . . this love . . . This sad but earthy part of life. Weve all got to go. Thank goodness there are parties.
