Tonight is my last night of horror themes for Friday Night Theme - TopicsExpress

Tonight is my last night of horror themes for Friday Night Theme Night. Naturally I wanted to play the theme from my favorite horror film - Halloween. But I played it last year on this night and itd be boring if I played it again. So, tonights pick is at least somewhat related to Halloween. John Carpenters Halloween was released in 1978 and was the first slasher film of its kind. It even spawned 7 sequels. Friday the 13th is only one of many serial slasher films inspired by Halloween. Id also say its one of the most successful. Even it has 9 sequels and both series also had recent reboots. Youll notice that all of the movies I chose for the horror themes are connected to at least one of the other films. Both The Exorcist and Psycho were loosely based on true stories. The creepy mother/son thing is the obvious Psycho/Friday the 13th connection. Friday the 13th is also related to Jaws in that composer Harry Manfredini took cues from John Williams timing and use of music to portray the threat in Jaws. Manfredini also used silence as a way to ease the audience before a big scare. Much like in Jaws, we dont see the killer until near the end of the film. Which works as a great twist in Friday the 13th. Although once you know the mother is the killer, it makes all viewings after that less suspenseful. And oh yeah...spoiler alert? (If you dont know by now then you clearly live under a rock) Somewhere along the line the verbal representation of Jason Vorhees theme has taken on a life of its own. Generally people sound out the theme as cha cha cha but if you actually listen to it, youll realize that its ki ki ki, ma ma ma - Manfredinis nod to the line that Jasons mother repeats near the end of the film - kill her, mommy. Ki coming from kill and Ma coming from mommy. Wrap your brain around THAT!
