Tonight is the Jewish holiday of Passover, a celebration of freedom from slavery for the Jewish people. The holiday is very meaningful to me as my family was fortunate to escape persecution in Uzbekistan & found religious & economic freedom here in the US. I found this NYT article from 1989, the year my family came to this country, that discusses the challenges & concerns US & Israel faced in accepting such a huge flood of Jews into their countries. What I found most striking is the concern that Soviet Jews might take away jobs from existing citizens. Of course history painted a different picture. 25 yrs later, we find that Soviet Jews werent taking jobs, but creating them. Google, for instance, was started by Sergey Brin, a Russian immigrant responsible not only for creating tens of thousands of jobs at Google, but also hundreds of thousands, if not millions of jobs that wouldnt have been created without Googles capability. Through many channels of spending, this heavily contributed to US & Israels GDP growth. Very grateful this Passover to have my freedom. Happy Passover!
