Tonight was one of those nights where I realized the calling of this great profession I have as a USCG pilot. We got launched on SAR for an overdue vessel south of Puerto Rico, which was later confirmed as 2 persons in the water. After searching for over 2 hrs, I was beginning to lose hope. The people had been floating at sea for over 24 hrs and multiple assets were on scene searching with no luck. The 65 had to RTB for fuel. The Casa remained strong though. I was at the controls steering around a heavy squall, when I spotted a flashing LED out of the corner of my NVGs. We immediately marked posn and I banked hard right to set up an orbit overhead. It was the 2 PIWs using there iPhone flash w/ a waterproof lifeproof case to signal us. We vectored in a good sam and 2 lives were saved! My crew performed flawlessly throughout it all! The adrenaline and excitement I felt tonight was something that most will never feel. Gosh I love this job.....
