Tonight was something of a deeply personal triumph conducting the UNISA Foundation Orchestra. Five years ago I conducted a symphony orchestra on an event that pretty much shattered my confidence and belief that I had what it takes to lead a large orchestra. I had accepted that I have limitations and that orchestral conducting was maybe not for me. I cannot thank Paul Rodgers enough for coaxing me back into the saddle to conduct 70 musicians - a combination of my professional colleagues and music students who are just so hungry to learn from the experienced. I have been fortunate enough in my lecturing to experience the indescribable satisfaction of seeing the light go on in young peoples heads. Tonight I saw that light go on in these up and coming students and it was thrilling. But most importantly, my confidence is back and I feel limitless right now...and all in my year of Fifty and Fabulous.
