Tonight we had a really good rehearsal for Hamlet. Its really great to see such dedication from all these actors. They are mostly freshmen doing their first Shakespeare and they are all starting to get it. We have a lot of work to do but Im really encouraged by this ensemble. But its the individual work that makes me remember why I love directing college students. I was able to send my Ophelia away with some simple direction for a scene we just have not gotten right and she came back portraying a heart-breaking mad scene. Oh and shes a freshman. My Hamlet ASKED to work his soliloquies and boy did he work them tonight! To be or not to be was simultaneously heavy and thought provoking. But it was his work on What a piece of work is man that was truly impressive. In this Hamlet we continually come back to this monologue. It starts our play and essentially ends it. Our Hamlet says it often but three major times and each time meaning something different. Each time he worked them diligently, took direction and really built an arc for himself through these 3 monologues. I told him that was the first time I saw MY Hamlet in rehearsal and he had those in the rehearsal room tearing up. Oh...and hes a sophomore. Well done to all tonight. Were getting there!
