Tonight we watched the Robocop remake. Let me say right off the - TopicsExpress

Tonight we watched the Robocop remake. Let me say right off the bat, that Paul Verhoevens original is THE iconic classic it deserves to be, sullied only by worsening sequels, a weird TV series and Canadian made TV movies. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised and really liked Jose Padihas version. He took the basic Robocop concept and went at it from a totally different angle, but still manage to keep the story recognizable. Verhoevens classic was a glimpse into the near future from a 80s point of view, and the remakes outlook is firmly planted in the here and now. Where the original took that caustic, satirical, violent and yes comic booky view of Alex Murphy and his world, the remake took a slightly more emotional, humanistic slant, with a sly sarcasm of its (our) world. Michael Keaton and especially Gary Oldman were really great. Jackie Earle Haley and Sam L. Jackson were good to. And hes no Peter Weller, but Joel Kinnerman did a decent job as Murphy/Robocop. Also, Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner, the writers of the original film helped write the remake. All in all, I found it quite entertaining. Is it Verhoevens Robocop? No! Who would ever want it to be? Is it better? Worse? Neither. Its a different film with a different agenda. If you just separate one from the other you just might be able to enjoy them both for different reasons.
