Tonights Dad Facts: Spuds, Tonight you play Red Butte Garden in Salt Lake City, Utah. As you know, our family lived in Sandy, Utah (south of Salt Lake City) from 1970 - 1978. I attended the @University of Utah as did your Aunt Susan. I think Uncle Gar may have spent time there as well…I can’t recall for sure. Aunt Kathy was born in Utah as was your cousin Sarah. I won’t boor you with history or geography, but I will tell you this … there is a very large “U” on the hill above the University. It is my understanding that back in the day, college kids hiked up there and drank beer. As you can imagine, your saintly Dad would have no personal knowledge of this. On a musical note, you should know that David Laflamme of “Its A Beautiful Day” (think White Bird) was born in Salt Lake City. I really enjoyed their music. Recently, Prudy and I attended a concert here in Bellingham starring Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. He was reminiscing about the old days in San Francisco, and he mentioned he originally formed the group with David LaFlamme. One other note about “It’s a Beautiful Day”. The band almost got to play at Woodstock in 1969. Promoter Bill Graham wanted another act besides the Grateful Dead to be on the billing. The guy running Woodstock listened to tapes of two bands and liked both of them. He couldn’t decide, so he flipped a coin. It’s a Beautiful Day lost the coin flip. You may have heard of the band who won the coin flip. Carlos Santana! Who knew!!! Love, Dad
