Tony Denison plays Lt. Andy Flynn on Major Crimes on TNT on Monday nights. We were fortunate enough to talk to Tony about the show this season and more. Click here to see what Tony’s watching on TV. While there has always been great camaraderie between the Major Crimes characters, this season it seems like there has been a focus on showing the squad as a close group of friends. I’m thinking particularly about the episode which ends with Rusty’s high school graduation party. Was there in fact a particular emphasis in showing the squad that way? Well, we all legally signed on to be guardians for Rusty, so it stands to reason that along with Captain Raydor, we’d all be concerned with Rusty’s welfare. His hopes and his dream Typically in each episode there is one ore more times in which you provide some very subtle yet very funny comic elements to the show, often it’s no more than a facial expression. Is it scripted that way or is that a result of your interpretation of the script? There are so many great exchanges, especially between GW Bailey and myself that just lend themselves to my eye-rolling! James Duff, Creator / Executive Producer once told me that he so much looks forward to my reactions. Also, my character gives GW ample opportunities to return in kind his fair share of similar reactions. Do you enjoy comedic roles? You’re not really known for that, is that something that you would like to do more of? I Love comedy. I once did a short lived sit-com Love and Marriage, that was so much fun to do. However, I did do my fair share of romantic comedies on stage in New York. As an actor, I have the wonderful opportunity on Major Crimes to find a reality that allows the true funny moments in life to come forth and hopefully be authentic. Its a great challenge. On the other hand, there have been a number of heavy, rather dark episodes this season, including a few episodes about murdered children. When shooting those episodes, does the subject matter have any effect on you? Is it harder to shoot those type of episodes? Any effect on the rest of the cast and crew? They are definitely a challenge. There’s times when I have to step back on set and get my bearings! Although I know that the crime scene we depict are recreation from real life murders, the ones with children are particularly disturbing. I’ve often said that my life as LT. Flynn exists between the words action and cut. For real cops action begins when they wake and cut occurs when they finally get to sleep. Rusty came out as being gay this season, was that a big deal for the cast and crew? Was it discussed at all with the writers? Did the network care? Or, in this day and age was it a non-event? It wasn’t so much a big deal for cast and crew. The whole idea of it was an opportunity for good drama. However, while the realization and reveal was a big deal for Rusty’s character, it was written wonderfully in the script and performed equally as wonderful by Graham Patrick Martin. You shoot a new episode each week, correct? Can you tell us what a typical work week is for you? When do you get the script? What happens between then and the time you’re shooting? How long is the shoot for each episode? Each episode takes 7 1/2 weekdays to shoot. The day before we begin production on our scripts we have a read through with the guest cast, which is helpful to everyone. Writers and actors. Its a great process. What do you like to do when you’re not working? Whenever I can I do volunteer work for the GW”S charity The Sunshine Kids. I also do lots of volunteer work for people in recovery. Any vacations coming up? Any favorite vacation spots? I’m not a big vacation guy. However, my ideal vacation is getting to travel to do a film and visit some interesting local. This way I can do what I Love while being a tourists of sorts. What are you watching on TV nowadays? There are so many good new shows on television lately. I love Veep, Sons of Anarchy, Orange is the New Black, Game of Thrones, almost any film showing on TCM and reruns of Frasier…to name a few. You have a few movies coming out, can you tell us about them? (Note – Denison was in demand and busy during the off-season with four upcoming films, including the final chapter based off Ayn Rand’s popular series, Atlas Shrugged: Who is John Galt?, where he stars alongside Kristoffer Polaha (Ringer). He also completed the modern-day thriller, Dirty, alongside Chaz Bono and Alexandra Paul and recently filmed Clarity alongside Major Crimes co-star Nadine Velazquez and another film called Dementia.) I think I would rather tell you about each one of these films closer to their release dates, so we have something else to talk about with the possibility of more publicity. However, I will say that in Clarity and in Altas Shrugged I got a chance to play villians one again…always a blast!. - hereistv/?p=41505
