Too many dairy cows suffer from ill health, poor levels of welfare, and lack of access to pasture. Other farmed animals, such as pigs and chickens, have specific minimum welfare standards set by European Union law. So why shouldn’t dairy cows? Compassion has joined forces with the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and ice-cream makers Ben & Jerry’s to campaign for an EU Dairy Directive. If you’ve not already joined the Supporting Better Dairy campaign, please sign the petition now. • Good housing - including access to grazing and the prohibition of tethering. • Good feeding - a daily diet which meets the cow’s needs. • Good health - ensuring cows are healthy and do not undergo pain and suffering. • Appropriate behavior - cows having the ability to express their natural behavior.
