Took a break for the holidays, but Im back at it this week. I call it a break but those couple of weeks prominently featured us getting the house packed for our move this month, and then a vicious stomach bug that swept through the family leaving a trail of putrid bodily fluids in its wake. Speaking of which, if youre ever compiling a list of the Top Five Most Fun Things To Do At Night, Im quite sure dealing with two puking 18-month-olds wont make the cut. A record 13 vomit clean-ups that evening. All conducted by yours truly because my wife was also busy throwing up. Anyway, there was a Christmas celebration in there somewhere -- well, four Christmases. Christmas with my sister-in-law, then Christmas with my father-in-law, then Christmas with my mother-in-law, then Christmas with my family. Then New Years. Then we packed about 20 people into my parents four bedroom house for my Dads 60th birthday party. 20 people is just the bare minimum number for a family gathering, because it consists only of the Walsh siblings, plus spouses, plus kids. And not even all of the Walsh siblings, since one them lives in a monastery. All in all, a hectic holiday season -- maybe not quite as hectic as last year when I left my job, we moved from Kentucky to Maryland, had two birthday celebrations, Christmas, a wedding to attend, and then frozen pipes and a flooded house, all in the span of about a week. This is what it means to be young and have a family, I guess. Lots of changes, lots of growing, lots of babies and weddings all around, lots of moving, lots of poop and puke to clean up -- sometimes all at once. Im sure one day things will settle down and life will be peaceful and quiet and predictable. And then Ill die. Really, Im in no hurry to get to that point. I wont know what to do with myself, anyway. I think I need the craziness. Its all Ive ever known. Although I will definitely enjoy not having to mop up other peoples vomit. That part Im looking forward to.
