Top 25 Tracks of the Year: #1. Pendulum - FKA twigs It’s safe to say that London songstress Tahliah Barnett won music in 2014. Her excellent debut record ‘LP1’ was easily the best album of the year and any track on that record could contend for a spot on this countdown. There is the seductive “Two Weeks” and the dark closing track “Kicks.” There is the sinister “Numbers” and the sweetly creepy “Hours.” Then there is “Pendulum,” a heart-wrenching lament for a relationship gone awry. ‘LP1’ may be full of powerful and overwhelmingly arresting moments, but there is none quite as forceful as the 1:30 mark of “Pendulum” when that wave of a chorus first hits you. When Barnett cries “so lonely trying to be yours / but you’re looking for so much more,” the musical reinforcement that accompanies her makes for the single most affective chorus in music this year. The first time that I heard it, I absolutely folded under its beauty and that impression has stuck with me more than any other musical moment in the last twelve months. With no other artist are you as capable of wholly understanding the sentiments that they intend to deliver and that’s the beauty of Barnett’s artistry: she is able to make you feel entirely subjugated by her word while simultaneously empowered by it. 2014 = the year of the twig.
