===== Top Current Affairs 02 January 2015 ====== 1- Centre replaces 64-year old ‘Planning Commission’ with ‘NITI Ayog’. NITI stands for ‘National Institution for Transforming India’. 2- M Sathiyavathy is appointed as the new and the first female ‘Director General of Civil Aviation’ of the country. She succeeds Prabhat Kumar as such for a 3-year term lasting on January 28, 2018. 3- Centre introduce a nationwide Real Time Monitoring of use of toilets from January 2015. Citizens can now act as the sanitation watchdog by uploading image/video of any discrepancy on the official website; triggering government machinery into action. Earlier, the monitoring was done only about the construction of toilets. As per Census 2011, sanitation coverage in rural India was 32.70%. 4- Government makes insurance regulator (IRDA) more ‘nationalist’ with prefix ‘India’ in the moniker. IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority) will now be known as ‘Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India’ (IRDAI). 5- AK Mital is appointed as new Chairman of Railway Board & ex-officio Principal Secretary to the Indian government. He succeeds Shri Arunendra Kumar to the office. 6- Centre hikes basic excise duty on Petrol and Diesel (Both Branded and Unbranded) by Rs 2 per litre begining January 2, 2015. The generated fund will go into the infrastructure development programme of the government, particularly the building of 15000 kms of roads, during current and next financial year. 7- Delhi Police launches women’s safety mobile app ‘Himmat’.
