====== Top Current Affairs 9 July 2014 ==== 1. India lose maritime territory to Bangladesh in a UN tribunal ruling. The court awards Bangladesh 19,467 square km of the total 25,602 sq km of disputed territory in the Bay of Bengal. The verdict is final and binding as there is no option for appeal. Bangladesh has filed the case in 2009 under the UN Convention on Law of Sea (UNCLOS) against India. 2. Ashraf Ghani is set to be the next President of Afghanistan. He secures 56.4% of valid votes as against 43.5% of his rival Abdullah Abdullah. The official result will only be declared on July 24 following the scrutiny and auditing of votes in the wake of alleged voting fraud. He has served as the economist in the World Bank. 3. Veteran Indian tennis star Vijay Amritraj launches the IPL-style Champions Tennis League (CTL). The debut edition, featuring six city franchise, will take place from November 17-26 this year. Winners will get to pocket a prize money of Rs 1 Crore while the same is 50 lakh for the runner-ups. 4. Britain to honour Mahatma Gandhi by putting his statue in Parliament Square – right outside British parliament. The place is filled with statues of statesmen and other historical figures. 5. Railway minister Sadananda Gowda presented the Rail Budget for the year 2014-15 with focus on modernization of network and to cut down on budgetary deficit. Bullet train has been proposed on Mumbai-Ahmadabad sector. Speed of select trains to be increased to 160-200 kmph in 9 earmarked sectors. The present network will be upgraded to accomodate higher speed for existing trains. To set up Diamond Quadrilateral network of high speed rail connecting major metros and growth centers of the country – a move which will significantly reduce travel time between major cities. Wi-fi Services in A-1 and A category stations and in select trains. Plans to achieve paperless offices in 5 years. To set up Railway University for training in both technical and non-technical subjects besides establishing Innovations and Incubation Centre to harness the ideas generated from staff. Proposal to harness solar energy by utilizing roof top spaces of stations, railway buildings and land. Upgradation of e-ticketing to support 7200 tickets per minute as against current limit of 2000 tickets per minute.
