Top Great Ape news for the week September 28th through October 4th~ 1). Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund trackers are reporting that on September 18, 2014, gorilla Ubafatanye aka Fat (hope she doesn’t get a complex), gave birth! This marks the first birth to the Musilikale Group! Congrat’s Ubafatanye! 2). Very sad news from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Trackers, dominant silverback Bwenge was found dead October 1, 2014. He had recently had a couple of altercations with lone silverback Turatsinze, but had been treated for his wounds and appeared to be healing. Bwenge is the son of the legenday Titus, and resided with the Beetsme Group for sixteen years before setting out on his own and forming his own Group in the Virunga National Park. He will be dearly missed by so many. Rest in peace Bwenge. 3). Namoki is getting ready for her big move from the Bristol Zoo to the Belfast Zoo on October 14, 2014. Namoli leaves behind her father Jock, mother Romina and half-brothers Komale and Kukena at the Bristol Zoo. Best of luck in your new home at the Belfast Zoological Gardens! Your future is bright! 4). There were two more arrest of Ape Dealers that took place in Cameroon on October 1, 2014, when authorities found them with one gorilla skull, four chimp skulls and one mandril skull. Great work LAGA and Cameroon authorities. 5). Pele at Tampa’s Busch Gardens had an ultra sound done on July 28, 2014, that shows a healthy and kicking baby! She is due to give birth in November and the father of the baby is first time dad Bolingo. 6). JJ aka Jim Jr. at the Miami Zoo, passed away on Saturday October 4, 2014, of Heart Failure after a series of tests and a procedure of having an infected tooth pulled. JJ did have a history of heart problems and he had become very lethargic, not eating and overall signs of health issues. JJ was loved by so many and was an outstanding father. JJ was born at the Gulf South Research Center and moved to the Miami Zoo on March 8, 1983. He leaves behind two daughters, Moka (age 18) at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Alice (age 12) at the Como Zoo and one grandson D’jembe (age 1) at the Pittsburgh Zoo. He was preceded in death by his father Jimmie Gee, his mother Sheila, one brother Moja, three sisters, Tee Teche, Tina, and Hope, two daughters, one stillborn, one unnamed baby at 5 days old and one grandson, Kito, (4 months) also of cardiac arrest. Condolences to the Metro Miami Zoo, JJ’s keepers and gorilla family; Josephine (age 50), Fredrika (age 40), and Kumbuka (age 18). 7). The world celebrated World Animal Day on October 4, 2014! 8). Bwana is settling in to the Warsaw Zoo after his transfer from Artis on October 1, 2014. Welcome to your new home young man!
