Top Ranking American School is in Singapore (Newswire.net - July 22, 2013) – Honolulu, Hawaii – Singapore American School (SAS) was ranked 7th compared to other private, public, magnet and public charter schools in the United States when using Advanced Placement (AP) Scores. This is significant as SAS, an international school in Singapore, is located half a world away, serving youth from more than 50 different cultures, languages and countries. Dr. Tim Stuart, Principal of Singapore American School’s High School, is excited about these results and the new strategic planning and implementation that will be ongoing over the next school year. “There is only so much time in the day – the amount of information is so massive, we need to teach kids HOW to understand, synthesize, connect, analyze… understanding the concepts of revolutions may be more important than knowing the intricacy of one revolutionary war,” shares Dr. Stuart. We sent three teams of teachers to visit accomplished schools and compare ‘ best practices’, so we can learn what other top schools are offering and share our own curriculum as well. These teams visited schools in the United States, Finland and Australia. We are starting with the High School and then will be looking at ‘best practices’ for our school divisions. Our 22 member high school team discovered eight essential themes that we will be incorporating into our own SAS curriculum on INNOVATION: 1.Boldly visualize and build school identity. 2.Clearly define and measure purposeful school-wide learning outcomes (curriculum and character outcomes). 3.Build meaningful relationships with students using an advisory and mentorship program 4.Cultivate global citizens with authentic connections to local communities. 5.Develop and implement problem-based learning and interdisciplinary courses. 6.Foster students’ pursuit of individual passions and interests through flexible personalized learning. 7.Purposefully design spaces to better facilitate learning. 8.Use relevant technology to maximize student learning Next year, 8,000 hours will be spent on thought leadership to reshape the high school for the future. Dr. Stuart and his faculty welcome conversations about how to improve SAS for the future to be not just one of the top international schools in Singapore, but in the world. Singapore American School (SAS), an international school in Singapore, is an independent, non-profit, coeducational, college preparatory day school offering an American curriculum from preschool through grade 12. Established in 1956, the school primarily serves the American and international expatriate communities of Singapore. SAS is registered with the Singapore Council for Private Education, affiliated with the Office of Overseas Schools through the U.S. Department of State, and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
