Topic for Today: Grocery Shopping and Saving $$$ The process of grocery shopping, in particular watching other people grocery shop and listening to their comments is some thing that has held my interest for some time now. And today was no different. As I was doing our household shopping today at Winco, there was one couple I kept running into as we progressed through the store. She kept commenting to her husband about how she was trying to save them money and that is why she had coupons with her. There were a couple of times I actually pointed out a cheaper more cost effective product different than her coupon product, and she said thank you but no, she had her coupons. When I was in line to check out, they actually ended up being behind me. I noticed her observing all that I had purchased and in the end, lots of fresh fruits and vegees, and meat etcc. When all was said and done my bill including some household cleaning products and treats for the dogs for the next two weeks came to just under $125. (Just as a note, I have been managing for well over the past two years now to keep our monthly grocery bill for the household somewhere between $350 - $450 per month. ) When she was next to me packing her purchases, she finally asked me of her own accord how much my bill was, I told her and then I asked her how much hers was. It came to $168 and she had nearly half the purchases that I did. She asked me how I do it, and I told her that you need to be very conscious of your purchases and that coupons in many instances are great for the manufacturer, but may not be the best for the consumer. You need to be “smart” about your shopping. I also told her I noticed she really didn’t have much fresh produce. I asked her why and she said just not as convenient. I question this, as it takes just as much time to make a “packaged” product such as scolloped potatoes as it does to boil up some wonderfully fresh potatoes. Which actually are healthier for you and are a lot more cost effective. Makes me wonder, how many people out there, either do not know how to budget, how to shop healthy or maybe they don’t even know how to cook? Have we created a society so relient on convenience foods and products and what the advertisers are marketing to us? The interesting thing that did come out of this today, is that she asked me if I would be interested in meeting her the next time and walking her through the store and show her how to save money. We exchanged numbers.
