Topics The ECS1 will start from the fundamentals of geometric crystallography, including the principles of symmetry in crystals, the concepts of direct and reciprocal space, and the diffraction conditions. A particular attention will be given to the usage of the International Tables for Crystallography. Since this first part will be prerequisite to the rest of the program, it will include exercises in order to make students familiar with concepts and instruments. The School is directed to students from all fields of crystallography. Therefore, a strong effort will be made to underline similarities and differences in the several techniques of data collection and structure determination. Consistently, diffraction techniques and proper sources (including synchrotron radiation, neutrons, electrons) will be introduced with a critical eye to their complementary uses. Crystallographic methods for structure solution and refinement will be described through a path which ideally follows the increase in dimensionality and complexity of the system, from small molecules to macromolecular assemblies. Experts in the field will explain how to analyze with criticism the distribution of electron density in order to extract different levels of information, depending on data accuracy and on adopted techniques. Also, the key importance of crystallographic databases in the structural analyses of crystalline solids will be highlighted. A series of frontier talks will explore highlights and hot topics of crystallography, focusing on the recent progresses and future perspectives, in order to incentivize young researchers and inspire them with novel ideas for future research projects in crystallography. The contents of the ECS1 and its program can apparently seem too ambitious, spanning from fundamentals to key topics of crystallography. The aim, far from being exhaustive, is to deliver a clear cut message on what the discipline can do for the benefit of science.
