Honesty may be the best policy, but sometimes it is apparently not the most beneficial as in the case of an overseas Filipino worker who was employed at a beauty salon in the United Arab Emirates. Gulf News reported on Tuesday that the Filipino worker has lost her job because she and another co-worker testified in a case involving a customer who claimed having lost her hair due to an expired dye used on her by the Tunisian hairstylist of the salon. According to court records, the incident happened at the salon on Jumeirah Beach Road in January of this year. The victim, 27, who is of Moroccan nationality said the hairstylist covered her hair with a cap for an hour. Apparently, when the hairstylist removed the cap and started washing the victim’s hair, she noticed her hair had started falling in big chunks. “I screamed at her until another staffer came to help her clean my hair. So much of my hair fell that I even saw my scalp. I immediately called the police,” the Moroccan said. She was then referred to the Dubai Health Authority for examination, and the results proved that the victim’s hair loss was, indeed, due to the expired dye used on her hair. The hairstylist and the salon manager earlier pleaded not guilty to endangering the victim’s health before the Dubai Misdemeanors Court. At the prosecution, the Filipina and her Moroccan co-worker preferred to tell the truth; testifying that the hairstylist did not use the dye as requested by the customer. Rather, the accused used an expired product in attending to their client’s hair. During the prosecution, the two witnesses also narrated that the salon manager ordered the other staff to get rid of the expired dye shortly after the incident so as not to have evidence. The OFW also disclosed that “The salon manager and her business partner asked us to allege that the victim was losing her hair before she came to the salon. When they learnt about our testimony, they sacked us.” Thanks to the OFW’s testimony, a fine of Dh5,000 (PhP 60,643) each was issued against the salon’s 36-year-old hairstylist and the Syrian manager, 29, for risking the customer’s health. As reported by Gulf News, the ruling is subject to appeal within 15 days.
