Tottenham 2-1 Schalke Player Ratings Hugo Lloris 6.5/10 - Not so much for the French star to do for much of the game, as he made made his first appearance under Pochettino, though his kicking was a little off. No chance with the goal. Great save from substitute Donis Avdijaj. Kyle Naughton 6.5/10 - Naughton looks a better player so far under Pochettino, exhibiting much tighter defensive play. Well worth being given another chance under a more defensively astute manager. Eric Dier 7/10 -Looked very comfortable on the ball on his debut, and put in a couple of excellent tackles, though was also guilty of a couple of overly flashy touches that saw him lose possession. One moment of great covering in the second half as he grew in confidence. A bargain at £4 million. Younes Kaboul 7/10 - Kaboul was again impressive in the Spurs central defence, winning headers and striding forward with the ball. Functioned well alongside Dier, and the defence was visibly weaker once he left the field. Very much worth keeping if he can stay fit. Danny Rose 7/10 - Another strong performance from the left back, whose recent improved contract seems to have really upped his level of quality. Tenacious in defence and so energetic getting forward. May have played himself into a start against West Ham. Nabil Bentaleb 6.5/10 - Playing as the deepest midfielder, Bentaleb lacked the natural defensive qualities Capoue had shown in other games, though was disciplined in sitting back. Volleyed wide from just outside the Schalke box. Lewis Holtby 7/10 - One reckless tackle that would have been red in the Premier League shows the combative side of his game that he needs to manage. Missed a great chance to open the scoring, finding himself through on goal, but then played a great cross through to Adebayor to score. Mopped up well while he was on the field. Christian Eriksen 6.5/10 - Classy in possession throughout by the Dane, though didn’t have many shooting opportunities. May be expected to do a little more legwork, especially in defensive situations. Aaron Lennon 7/10 - Looked dangerous whenever he picked up the ball, and used his searing pace well to unsettle the Schalke back line. Made a lot of central runs during the first half, rather than finding himself in wide positions. Erik Lamela 6/10 - Involved in the first goal, but a little less of an attacking threat than he has been in the other preseason games. Needs to have the courage to get on the ball and make things happen, whatever the quality of the side. Emmanuel Adebayor 7/10 - Scored with a great finish after Lewis Holtby’s pass through a crowded area. And continues to look an attacking threat for Spurs, hugely important given Sherwood’s departure. Subs: Ben Davies (Rose 46’) 6/10 - Looks a slightly more disciplined defender than Rose, more willing to sit back than the former Leeds man, though was weaker against Schalke than his teammate. Still yet to show his Swansea form. Andros Townsend (Lennon 46’) MOTM 7.5/10 - The most dangerous player as soon as he came on the pitch, with several runs down the left hand side that saw him find Spurs players in the box. Will be disappointed to have side footed wide when the goal opened up, but his long range shooting was excellent. Hit a great shot that was saved only to fall to Soldado to nod in, and forced Fahrmann into another super stop late on. Harry Kane (Lamela 46’) 6/10 - Straight away put through on goal though didn’t manage to get his shot off, also was on the end of a tackle in the box where he was looking for a penalty. Several moments on the ball where he couldn’t quite offload the ball or get a shot away. Roberto Soldado (Adebayor 46’) 6.5/10 - Blazed over a chance from a super Townsend cross, but was lively with his play, and reacted lighting quick to nod in Townsends saved shot. Sandro (Eriksen 67’) 6/10 - One rasping shot that was encouraged by the crowd and drew a desperate save from Ralf Fahrmann. A couple of super challenges as well. Tom Carroll (Bentaleb 74’) 5.5/10 - Few chances for the youngster to impress, with the game becoming messy once the many substitutions began. Zeki Fryers (Kaboul 79’) 5/10 - Came on and the defence failed to respond to Kaboul’s departure, Schalke immediately scoring through old boy Kevin Prince-Boateng. Cristian Ceballos (Holtby 84’) 5/10 - Nearly scored after being put through on his left foot, Fahrmann making a super sprawling stop, and lobbed over when he should have done better late on.
