Tourism Development Tourism is one important sector the LGA is seriously takling with every promptness, with a view to making the natural beaches and serene beach fronts attractive to the delights of tourists or visitors from within and without our borders. A lot of development projects have been put in place to boost tourism in the local government and consequently encourage investors in tourism industry. The local government is equally making a frantic effort in ensuring that tourism and resort centers in the area have pleasurable accommodation, security and proper infrastructural facilities. Places of interest that are viable for development into profitable and enjoyable tourist attractions are many in the area, these include: beaches, lagoon, creeks, islands, detention camp, monumental centers, historical centers, e.t.c. BEACH The LGA is blessed with natural beach which extends from bar beach, in Victoria Island, running through the LGA to Port-Harcourt in river state. The beach is well maintained and always clean, beautify with natural coconut trees, which formed shades or canopies to the tourists or visitors. These characteristics explain the distinction of ours to others. Ours is a window on the Atlantic Ocean, where one feels the natural oceanic breeze, appreciates aquatic lives and gets away naturally refreshed. LAGOON The LGA is blessed with cool, calm and tranquil lagoon. This has attracted tourists who spend weekends on the riverside under the igi-meta (i.e three trees). These are the three special trees that symbolize ruling houses at Ibeju town. RESORT CENTRE Based on the attraction scenery of the LGA and its richness in tourists potentials, so many resorts centers have sprung up to actually deliver the tourists expectations in the sector. Eko tourist centre, hermitage resort centre, and host of others are the available resorts in the LGA. DETENTION CAMP This is the building where the late chief Obafemi Awolowo was confined during the political turbulence in the old western region in the early 1960s. This building and the bed in which he slept have been preserved as part of the tourist attraction in the area. HISTORICAL CENTRE The houses of the Portuguese and French traders built of burnt bricks imported from overseas are still standing. Several government functionaries and geologist who visited the place to find out facts have found them very useful as research materials and potentials tourist attraction.
