Tourism is a tricky form of cross-cultural interaction. Sometimes I wish Taiwan gets as much exposure as Thailand for how pretty it is and how friendly and genuine people are. Other times I wish nobody goes so its beauty remains for our own recreation opportunities and its culture less invaded by a come-and-go consumption-based tourism. But not all interactions have to be genuine (if lucrative). Its just my ideal world. The question is why Thailand? Ive definitely encountered around ten Americans whove traveled there more than anywhere else in Asia. Its crazily popular. Outdoors and cultural experiences? Tons in Taiwan, not easily accessible for foreigners though. #tourism
