Tourist spots in Nilambur to get a facelift TNN Aug 14, 2013, 05.13AM IST MALAPPURAM: Soon, Nilambur will be developed into an international ecotourism destination. The government has directed to prepare a comprehensive master plan for development of all major tourist spots here, as part of its ecotourism initiative in the region. Rs41crore has been sanctioned for preparation of the master plan. According to Nilambur municipal chairman Aryadan Shoukath, the plan would be prepared by an internationally acclaimed agency. The ecotourism initiative was formally inaugurated by chief minister Oommen Chandy in February 2012. The project was planned to link the forest area from Thusharagiri to Perinthalmanna with adjacent tourist spots, thus leveraging the tourism potential of the district by adding greenery to tourist itineraries. However, only a few development works have been carried out after that. "Now, we are planning a multi-crore project as part of the initiative, by linking all tourism centres in the region with a view to attract foreigners as well as visitors from other states," he said. The project aims to develop Oli Waterfalls, Adyanpara Waterfalls, Kozhippara Waterfalls, Keralamkundu Waterfalls, DFO Bunglow, Teak Museum, Kanoli Plot, Valluvassery Central Nursery, Nadukani Ghat stretch, T K Colony and Poothottam Kadavu. "We will give special focus on tribal culture and ethnic food varieties of Eranad while implementing the project, so as to make Nilambur a major tourist destination in the country," said Shoukath. The project also envisions renovating Vadapuram Town Square at a cost of Rs1 crore. Viewpoints for tourists would be constructed at Canoli plot. It also envisages renovating 11 rooms of the Wood Industries situated against the Canoli plot for the use of the tourists. The DFO Bungalow situated here and the bio park at the Teak Museum will also be renovated. The project chalks out elephant safari and screening of documentaries about elephants at Nedumkayam as well.
