Tours Blackbutt & Macksville Cemeteries Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage & Museum Committee will be conducting guided tours of Blackbutt & Macksville Cemeteries on Saturday 18 October 2014. Blackbutt Cemetery was the original burial grounds for the village that was known as Central Nambucca and is located a short distance west of Macksville along Wilson Road near the intersection with Spalding’s Road. The cemetery was in use from the mid 1800’s until 1911. In the early years mourners and the coffin were transported up the river by boat, unloaded at a log wharf and the coffin carried up the hill for burial in the tree studded cemetery. Over the years bushfires have destroyed many of the wooden crosses marking the graves. Research officer Geoff Minett will conduct the tour. Those wishing to attend should meet at the Mary Boulton Pioneer & Cottage Museum, 38 Gumma Road, Macksville. (2 kms east of the Post Office). 10:00 am or the junction of Wilson & Spaldings Road 10:30 am. At the conclusion of this tour participants are invited to enjoy their lunch in the gardens of Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage & Museum. Macksville Cemetery From 1894 burials began to be carried out at the new site in Wallace Street, Macksville. This cemetery still operates today. The tour will be guided by Joy lane, President of the Mary Boulton Pioneer Cottage & Museum committee and will concentrate on the graves of the pioneers, people who made significant contributions to the Nambucca Valley or lived interesting lives, and those who died in unusual or tragic circumstances. The tour will commence at 1:30 pm. Booklets on both Blackbutt and Macksville Cemeteries will be for sale and a gold coin donation would be appreciated.
