Traces of Texas reader Herb Collier sent in this remarkable series of photos regarding his grandfather, Carroll D. Collier. Carroll was a medic during World War I. He was from Kimble County. He suffered from lung damage after the war, a result of having been gassed by the Germans. The photos show: 1) 360 Field Hospital, 90th Div, WWI. In training in 1917 in Texas before deployment to France. They were sent to the front in the major battles of St Mihiel, Coblenz, and Meuse-Argonne. PFC Carrol D Collier, is in the lower left, seated. 2) Privates Hughes, Eubanks, Carrol Collier, and H.M. Barker. US Army medics, all from Texas. Photo was taken in France in 1918. Privates Collier and Barker were from Kimble County, Texas. 3) After the war, Carroll Collier helped build the Burt Fleming American Legion Hall in Junction. The plaque tells you about it. 4) The stone American Legion hall in Junction that Carroll Collier helped build. 5) Carroll Colliers war artifacts, embedded in the wall of the American Legion Hall in Junction, Texas. Included are coins from every country his unit was in, a defused hand grenade, munitions, Carrolls service medallion with his name and service number, and the mess kit cover on which he inscribed the 90th Division emblem with the battles they were in and countries they traveled in. 6) An AMAZING thing .... Carroll Colliers mess kit, embedded in the wall of the American Legion hall that he helped build in Junction. Note that the mess kit lists the places his unit went while he was in France. 7) Carroll Colliers dog tag with his name and service number. 8) Foot stone placed at Carroll Colliers gravesite near Roosevelt, Texas. 9) The gate to the Copperas cemetery in which Carroll Collier is interred. Herb ... seeing all of these is a very emotional thing for me (and probably for others) and I dont really know why. I almost feel like I knew this great man. Bless your grandfather. Thanks so much for sharing these with us!
