Tracey Camerino I just recently introduced myself to the group. I am hoping to learn more about DCD as it is a possible dx for my son via his neurologist. He is only two years old and we are currently exploring all medical possibilities for him. I have always been concerned about his lack of coordination, awkward movement and delayed speech. I could go on and on but my this is my question: Is two years old too early to be concerned. His pediatrician believes DCD is a catch all dx when there is no obvious medical dx. Answer: The earlier you can obtain the proper diagnosis and get the proper therapies into place the sooner your child can learn and develop the skills to be the best he can be. We have families that are getting their children diagnosed as young as 2 and starting the appropriate therapies. Dyspraxia is a Neurological impairment impacting all areas of development whereas DCD is a disorder of motor impairment in planning impacting fine and gross motor skills. Dyspraxia is the motor, memory, judgment, processing, function, senses and use of language and Global with the speech concerns would need the extra support of the SLP for guidance. You are doing the right think and a Pediatric Neuro Psychologist will give you the more in depth information you need vs the information provided via a DCD diagnoses that is just motor based.
