Tracy Morgans (and his friends) injuries and the loss of his - TopicsExpress

Tracy Morgans (and his friends) injuries and the loss of his friend are tragic, for sure. But, because of this--as if a tractor-trailer has never been in this type of accident--the conversation about how it could have been prevented has taken some crazy turns. See the media coverage for more on that. Im embarrassed that so many of these discussions (not just this one) talk about the driver and the logs and the dispatcher and the hours and the et cetera, et cetera. . . These are human elements that will always be subject to mistakes, flaws, bad ideas, moods and deprivations of various states of sleep. Weve all made mistakes and near-mistakes under perfect conditions, any variable just increases the likelihood of one. The real problem is our standards for trucking technology and on-the-road technology. For the record, it is a problem that has ALREADY BEEN SOLVED! We are so far behind the curve on our trucks it is shameful. ABS, automatic transmissions, electric impulse drive/braking, brake cooling (or just disc brakes at all!), steering technology, and last-but-not-least: youtube/watch?v=ridS396W2BY Collision avoidance technology. Nuff said.
