Trade union and community activists came together on Tuesday to launch a campaign with one simple message; the privatisation of community programmes must be stopped. As you may know the Department of Environment have announced that the Social Inclusion and Activation Programme (SIAP) (formally the Local Community Development Programme) will be subject to competitive tendering from 2015. Competitive tendering goes against the inclusive and cooperative ethos of the community sector. It also opens up the door to for-profit companies to deliver community services for the first time. Workers have also been left in the dark about their future as the Department is refusing to talk to their union about their issues. However we have an opportunity over the coming months to make the Department do the right thing and stop the privatisation of community programmes. Communities Against Cuts will be staging a number of actions over the coming months, but as a first step we are looking for your help to get the message out there. The easiest way to do that is by sharing this petition with your friends, family and colleagues. You can also promote the campaign on Twitter and Facebook by using the hashtag #IsNotForSale. The camping launch was covered by RTE’s Drivetime; it starts at 2 hours 17 minutest on this podcast: goo.gl/ZqZAkL
