Trailer tattle: Haider Hes known for dancing, muscling and twitching his cheek muscles, but can Shahid Kapoor carry off the part of the brooding, tortured and introspective Shakespearean anti-hero Hamlet, who seeks to avenge the death of his father? The trailer of Vishal Bhardwajs latest Bard tribute Haider, written by journalist Basharat Peer, offers a solution that gives Kapoor his moments and the lead character his revenge. One hint: it makes a loud sound, often kills, and is loved by filmmakers the world over. The Danish prince is now a resident of insurgency-torn Kashmir in Peers re-imagination. The trailer keeps things light, emphasizing Kapoors all-round mastery, the possibility of several gun-battles, and the ensemble cast, which includes Tabu as his mother, Kay Kay Menon as the target of Haiders anger, and Shraddha Kapoor as his Ophelia. Irrfan Khan, who plays his ghostly father, makes a fleeting appearance in this trailer, but these are early days. Were expecting something darker in tone in the coming weeks before the October 2 release, which make clear the links between the Danish prince and a Kashmiri Muslim, and which eschews the bang-bang-gangster-drama tone of this offering. Peer has made To be or not to be into a statement about the disappeared in Kashmir. Hopefully, subsequent trailers will allow this cleverness to shine through.
