Training for Schools and Education By Ismail Mazari Challenging and aggressive behaviour in educational settings can be common place, but the risks and consequences can be significantly reduced by giving staff a deeper understanding of the causes of conflict and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to prevent and defuse situations. We work closely with schools and local authorities across the UK to reduce the risks and impact of conflict and violence inside and outside of the classroom. We have developed a range of training programmes that build on the skills and experience school staff already have, to give them greater confidence and simple strategies to reduce and manage problem behaviours. Maybo helps educators to meet their duty of care and regulatory requirements in a way that promotes positive values and relationships. Conflict costs Conflict can have long lasting damaging effects on both pupils and staff. The results from a March 2012 survey on physical violence by the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) show that 33% of the 814 teachers, lecturers, support staff and school leaders who responded have dealt with physical violence from pupils this school year. 2012 statistics from the Department for Education show that: Nearly 1,000 children are suspended from school for abuse and assault every school day. Persistent disruptive behaviour accounts for nearly a third of all cases of permanent exclusions in secondary schools. Major assaults on staff have reached a five-year high with 44 having to be rushed to hospital with serious injuries last year. Two thirds of teachers say bad behaviour is driving professionals out of the classroom. Managing challenging behaviour It is important to take a considered approach even if the statistics can be alarming. Maybo shows how staff safety and making decisions in the best interests of children go hand in hand. Our work with schools has identified four primary situations where conflict and violence occur: Resolving a confrontation between pupils Communicating with angry parents Dealing with trespassers on school grounds Responding to challenging behaviour from pupils towards staff Reducing the risks By understanding the potential causes of conflict, action can be taken to reduce the frequency and severity of such situations. Schools can make simple adjustments to policies and procedures, and staff can take proactive action to defuse situations before they escalate. Our models and learning methods integrate primary and secondary strategies to reduce and defuse conflict using simple and engaging methods that work for staff in their specific roles and working environment. Maybo training makes a difference Following Maybo training in a school with resourced provision for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties... The number of incidents of challenging behaviour reduced by nearly 40% Pupil behaviour improved (reward time earned increased by more than 10%) The number of incidents of seriously challenging behaviour (that required more than 30 minutes to resolve) dropped by 80% The number of incidents of physical intervention dropped by more than 80% This numerical evidence of effectiveness is further supported by observation of how staff behaviour changed following the training. The school observed that... Staff made more use of effective proactive prevention techniques, rather than just relying on strategies to handle conflict when it occurred Staff changed their body language to help them remain calm and to avoid inadvertently displaying aggressive signals Staff gave children more options and more responsibility to enable them to find their own resolution to difficulties. Flexible, effective, relevant challenging behaviour training solutions Training staff is a vital ingredient needed to safeguard pupils and support positive learning environments. However, if training is to make a real difference it must be relevant, flexible, affordable and based on principles that promote organisational policies and positive values. We work closely with our clients to establish the optimum training solution for them and their staff, ensuring staff get the level of training they need based on the risks they face, the role they perform and needs of the children and young people they support. Increasing financial and operational constraints make our blended learning options attractive and competitive, providing you with greater flexibility and helping you to get the most from your budget and your staffs time. Self-study options and work based coaching tools can be used to minimise abstraction, either as stand alone training or supporting face to face workshops that help staff develop higher level skills and understanding specific to their role. We help our educational clients make sure they have effective policies and controls in place that safeguard pupils and staff. Heads of Department and specialist roles can benefit from additional training modules, such as post incident and lone working training.
