Training has come so far since I began in 1990. We had a 39 hour Essentials of Firemanship and were thrown to the dogs. If you wanted to be a really GOOD fireman, you took Initial Fire Attack. Things have changed so much more for the better for todays recruits, and us older guys. So many hands on classes, longer, more intense and comprehensive courses. College credits. Its awesome. And while the states and instructors TRY to keep it realistic, there is just NO way to cover every type of scenario, in every type of building. A city block may have 20 houses on it, and no two could be built alike. It is VITAL to your safety and survival to know what to expect in a building, how to recognize it, and how to defeat it. Lets take the wall breach for instance. It is a fun, interesting, and important skill to learn and know. Its easy to do in class, and fairly cheap. A breach simulator can be built in an hour. 2 slices of rock and you are good to go. And thats how we are trained. get your tool, smash through the sheetrock and squeeze your ass through to safety. In many houses, thats exactly how it will happen. But then there are those that are a bit more complex...take a look at these;
