Training tip: 80% of all your running should be at 90-120 seconds slower than your 5K pace. Why is this? Because the physical adaptations that give your body a bigger engine take place at this pace. You become more efficient at circulating oxygen, develop more mitochondria, develop capillary beds. This affects both speed and endurance. Whether you are running 5Ks or marathons, this is true. The more miles you put in (up to the point where you risk injury by running more), the more efficient your body becomes.
