Transform does not mean to fix or make go away whatever trauma and scars you may be carrying from childhood; instead you slowly develop a new relationship with your difficulty, such that it is no longer a controlling factor in your life. — Phillip Moffit In my experience, developing a new relationship with past traumas takes courage and patience. You must have the courage to look at the under-belly of what is causing discomfort in your emotional life. There may be unpleasant memories or overwhelming feelings that you just dont want to examine. However, a big gift you can give yourself is to say hello to those dark shadows; invite them in for a short visit. Feel and grieve them without adding more meaning to their already challenging reality. Just acknowledging their presence can take some of the weight out of their heaviness. Youve noticed this before when youve talked to a friend about something troubling you. It lightened your load a little, didnt it? Over time, whether we acknowledge painful past events internally or externally, our emotional load becomes lighter and we are on the path to liberation. Without examination, we often end up repeating unhealthy patterns over and over again unconscious that this comes from an avoidance of acknowledging the full truth of our original pain(s). As Phillip Moffit suggests, a new relationship can be formed with past traumas and in doing so, it stops controlling our present behavior and therefore our life. That is one small step towards more mindfulness and inner peace. That is one giant leap towards freedom.
