Transport Workers Union bats for DRMs, agitation begins today PORT BLAIR, OCT 30/-/ State Transport Workers’ Union, Andaman & Nicobar Islands has decided to start a peaceful protest agitation in support of its demand for the grant of 1/30th of Pay in relevant scale of pay from the date of the engagement of DRMs and the regularization of services of about 430 workmen engaged on compassionate ground as DRMs for the last 6-7 years. Protest demonstrations will be held in front of the Transport Directorate at 12 noon and 5 PM from 31st October onwards. According to a Union release, it has been pursuing with the Directorate the issues of pay and regularization of services of DRMs since March, 2013 but the authorities have failed to meet the genuine demand. These workmen were selected for appointment after due process of appointment i.e. called for interview and Trade Test by open advertisement and Trade Test and interview were conducted. The merit list was also published and thus they were appointed as per the provisions of Recruitment Rules at that relevant time. All workmen are local youth and most of them have passed ITI Certificate course in various Trade from the Local Govt. Institute. These workers have been performing eight hours duty and nature of works is regular/perennial and they are entitled for 1/30 th pay in the relevant Scale pay plus D.A. as per Govt, of India, Ministry of Personnel Public Grievances & Pension O.M.No. F.No.49014/2/86-Estt(C) dt 07.06.1988 pending regularization of their services. After prolonged conciliation proceeding the conciliation office, (Assistant Labour Commissioner (H.Q) requested the department to implement the High court order extending the benefit of 1/30th of wages to all the DRMS working under the Directorate of Transport and also publish the provisional seniority list of DRMS on or before 30th September 2014. The Directorate of Transport has neither implemented the direction of the conciliation officer nor has any reply been given. Hence under the compelling circumstance union has decided to state peaceful agitation in front of the Directorate of Transport, said a communication received here today.
