Tribal sovereignty to me means the freedom from external control, - TopicsExpress

Tribal sovereignty to me means the freedom from external control, the right to self-govern, a self-directing freedom (especially moral independence). Tribal sovereignty refers to the inherent authority and right of indigenous tribes to govern themselves. This power is not delegated by congressional acts, although federal law still regulates the political and economic rights of tribal governments. As a result, notions of tradition and culture that are valuable to the administration of justice are lost. We Native Americans must ensure that culture and traditions are incorporated in the maintenance of peace and order, not through outside laws. Sovereignty can only be exercised through effective tribal institutions, which not only make the Tribe safer through the administration of justice, but also preempt the state and federal government from attempting to intervene and administer a foreign version of justice. With a well-functioning, administration, court and other law enforcement agencies, the state and federal governments will be less able to preempt or interfere with tribal sovereignty. Tribal conflicts and violations of law will be dealt with by tribal institutions of government, thereby the Tribes sovereignty is exercised and strengthened and better able to withstand attempts of encroachment by outside governments. Every tribal member is responsible for watering down tribal sovereignty when we standby and don’t take personal interest and allow the issues of the day. This gives the illusion that we as Native Americans cant even manage our own affairs. Thats why its so important we end this class war and join together in unity.
