Tribute to Miss Belle Dog: I lost my walking buddy today, my border collie, Miss Belle. We took our last walk together this morning, while it was cool, and beautiful, and she was still able to walk, a shorter distance than she used to do, but all that she could manage. Belle came to me unwanted and unannounced as a Mothers Day gift from Lori Lindsey, as a spare dog, because our 1st dog, Honey, was getting older! (Such is the thinking of a college freshman! ) She came with lies of how she was obtained, and had lived on campus ,with Lori , for the past month, both in her dorm, and at times, in her book bag during classes. We always said Belle was soooo smart, because she was a college educated pup! When she arrived, I thought it was the worst thing that had happened, because I had been telling Lori for months, NO, we were not having a 2nd dog! Especially with leash laws in Williamsburg, and I was working full time, and did not have time to house train another dog. So, when Belle arrived, I told Lori we were giving her away, that there was no way we could keep her, and proceeded to show Belles adorable puppy picture to about 30 to 40 friends, coworkers, (possibly even strangers?), in order to place her, anywhere, but our home!! We simply called her DOG for the first 2 wks she lived with us, because, we were not going to get attached. But after the first visit to our vet, Dr. Kinkead. with All Creatures Animal Clinic, and his diagnosis of her having a grade 4 heart murmur, with a life expectancy of 5 to 7 years, I relented, and kept her, because I had been unable to find the right home for her. Bill said we should name her Belle, after Hurricane Isabelle, which had Knocked our socks off at our river home, because she was the second worst thing to happen to us that year!! So thats how she got her name. But my purpose in writing this is the lesson I recognized in my heart this morning. EVERY TIME God brings something that you think is terrible into your life, it often grows into the best and the most beautiful things in your life. I would never have dreamed how much I would grow to love, and appreciate Miss Belle. She was there, and saw me through some of the hardest days of my life! She tested and developed my patience, (imagine having a Border Collie puppy housebound, and she really wanted to be a working dog, and especailly herd Honey Dog, aka, Alpha Dog, an OLD dog on campus!) When my knees began hurting about 5 years ago, I decided it was best for both me and Belle to walk. And so our walking partnership began! I will continue to walk, to honor her, and keep up our good habits, and remember all she meant to me. Belle was almost 10 ½ years old, and she far outlived her life expectancy. She will be sorely missed, but I know she is with her Creator, and her job on earth is finished. I can truly call her One in a Million, just like all my other girls!! Rest in Peace, dear, sweet Belle!
