Trinidad Guardian (Letter to Editor) Published: Sunday, March 2, 2014 Today’s Soca is rubbish: stop state funding for the mess “Everybody Scream,” “Put your hanna in the air,” “Raise yur rag,” “Wave yur flag,” “Anybody from Trinidad, anybody from Jamaica, anybody from Penal, anybody from Arima, anybody from Barbados?” These are the phrases we have been hearing for the past 22 years of the existence of the International Soca Monarch and Chutney Soca Monarch. We have to contend with the utter rubbish these people call lyrics and to add insult to injury they try to get crowd support with the same nonsensical phrases. The public is fed up of the crap. The quality of these shows has deteriorated and can be described as nothing but horrible and not worth attending or viewing on TV. Just imagine a 16-year-old Trinidadian 22 years ago who is now 38 years old going to these shows and having to listen to this absolute rubbish. What kind of society have we become to accept these performers’ utterances as music and culture? SuperBlue or Blue Boy cannot even speak. He is incoherent. He has no voice. Why, then, is he allowed to perform in a show that is streaming internationally on the Internet—just to disgrace this country? I hope the Government reviews its commitment to these shows and decides to stop giving away taxpayers’ money to both shows. Machel Montano is probably the best of the lot, yet nobody will ever come close to Sparrow and Kitchener. Somebody, do something; our society is in a decrepit state. R Ackbarali Petit Bourg, San Juan
