Trip Report: PFD Ocoee River Thought Id tackle this on my lunch break today... ...So, its been quite an awesome 1st year kayaking. Thanks again to all of the GCA leaders and members for encouragement! Through a few connections, I was able to line up a run with Jimmy Jones, Tony Butler, and Randy Barfield (the Paddle Crackers & Central Georgia River Network). It was a great first run and a ton of fun! Trip Highlights: - 2 rolls at Stagging eddy to kick the nerves (yes, I was on the Ocoee) - Rocked Broken Nose with a scary ferry above top hole - Quality Boof to the right of main hole at Double Suck - Saved myself from a roll just above Surprise Ledge - Got clobbered by the Top Wave at Table Saw (2 roll attempts w/ rocks, count to 5 before trying to roll, ultimately swam) - Collected my boat below Diamond Splitter - Caught the eddy above Hell Hole - Ferried to the right sneak at Powerhouse. - 3 celebration rolls on the paddle to the take out Major props to my 1st year kayaking pal Angela Greenwell who helped me line up the run and who kindly loaned me her dry top for the day. Thank you to Jenny Taylor who encouraged me to reach out to Jimmy to lead me down on the first run. For other kayakers getting ready for the Ocoee, youll want to have a strong roll and experience in some class II/III boogie water with large waves. I was told I did well for the first run on the river. I was prepared, however it is consistent, big water and it does require a good knowledge of your kayak and skills. Youll need to have a strong paddle stroke that you can use for extended periods of time. The diagonal waves are quite different than the Cartacay, Chatooga, and Natahala so be prepared to punch through them.
