Tropical Cyclone Bansi has had a major loss of strength, weakening - TopicsExpress

Tropical Cyclone Bansi has had a major loss of strength, weakening to a Category 2, although it will likely regain some of it back. Slow or near stationary movement is expected over the next 36 hours, and Bansi is expected to pass to the northeast of Mauritius Islands. This close call may bring heavy weather to some parts of this area, including high seas. Warnings remained in effect for Mauritius and Rodrigues today. Tropical Depression Mekkhala (01W) is 105 NM north-northwest of Yap. Mekkhala is a weakening system, but is expected to slightly intensify. JTWC currently has Mekkhala approaching Visayas, in the central Philippines, and then curving north toward Luzon by January 19th, while the center brushes by the eastern coast of those islands. With low confidence in the extended forecast period, JTWC expects this system to stay just offshore the coast of the central Philippines, as well as experience a significant decay. There continues to be an area of disturbed weather (Invest 93S) in the Mozambique Channel, approximately 400 NM west of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Dynamic weather guidance indicates weak development over the next 48 hours, as the system tracks eastward, while JTWC is giving it a low chance of developing into a significant tropical cyclone within the next 24 hours.
